Advice:
A slipped disk means there is damage to an intervertebral disk. An intervertebral disk is located between two vertebrae and it consists of a cartilage ring with a spongy elastic tissue in the centre. The cartilage ring will have broken and the central tissue has come out. This can press on a nerve root which gives much pain or it can disappear between the muscles, then you have few complaints.
After some time this tissue will be reasorbed by the body and the pain will disappear. This process can take half a year.
Bed rest is not necessary for the healing process. Nowadays we only advise bed rest if the pain is substantially reduced.
If the pain is not too bad an operation is not necessary. Though there can be reasons why an operation will be necessary:
1 great pain, not reacting on painkillers.
2 compression of a nerveroot. This can cause a partial or total disfunction of a muscle.
3 problems with micturition or defeacation, also caused by pressure on the corresponding nerves.
If there are signs of a slipped disk you should consult your doctor.

Bij een (zeldzame) hnp van L1-L2 is er naast rugpijn, pijn in het been, pijn in de lies en vaak een doof gevoel in de huid over de lies.
